Advice for Future Canes in Cannes
1. ADJUST EXPECTATIONS
You’re going to have a blast on this trip. It’s a one in a lifetime experience that offers more knowledge than a classroom. But adjusting expectations makes the trip much more enjoyable and lets you live in the present. Don’t stress about networking with big CEO’s or landing a job/internship; don’t be bummed when there aren’t any cool events at night happening or the first few talks you went to weren’t the best. Take everything in and enjoy every second, it’s going to be over before you know it.
2. IT’S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT
The first day or two can be chaotic and a lot to take in. That’s okay! You’re going to adjust to the festival and get to know your way around. Spend the first few days learning where things are and getting comfortable with your surroundings. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too much too quickly, you’ll have loads of time to hit up all the tents and listen to some great talks.
5. USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM
Even if you aren’t coming with friends on the trip, get to know the students coming along with you. It’s always nice to have people to walk with and go to tents with. However, do expect to be alone sometimes during the festival. It’s important you go to the talks you want and spend some time experiencing the events, even if it’s without people.
6. PACK SMART, PACK LIGHT
1.) Bring clothes for various weather conditions because it can be pretty unpredictable.
The days at the festival get HOT so expect to be sweating early on in the day. Tank tops, flowy shorts, and sunglasses will be your best friends. Cute yet cozy is the best combo!
2.) Bring things that make you feel at peace because the trip can be a bit overwhelming at times so it’s always nice to have something for comfort during tough times.
3.) Leave some room in your suitcase for shopping. There is plenty of time to go shopping during the trip and it’s easier to pick outfits when you know what the weather will be.
4.) Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking a ton both before and during the festival. Sneakers and other supportive footwear are a must.
3. CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF REGULARLY
It can be easy to overestimate how much we can handle, but this trip can get intense quickly. Make sure to observe how you’re feeling mentally and physically each day. Getting adequate sleep, enough food and water, and keeping yourself mentally healthy will make this trip much more enjoyable. Be honest if you need to take some time to rest, Meryl and Michelle WILL understand! Your health and safety are always the priority.
4. STOCK UP ON WATER & SNACKS
Food isn’t always abundant at the festival, especially if you miss the serving window or head to the wrong tents. Buy snacks and liquids at some of the convenience stores in Cannes so that no matter what, you’ll be fueled during the day.
